Omar Kherad

Omar Kherad obtained a medical degree in Geneva in 2004. He then completed the majority of his postgraduate training at the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) in the Department of Internal Medicine. After earning a doctorate in medicine, he was appointed as the chief physician of the Department of Internal Medicine at Hôpital de la Tour in Geneva, where he also became the director of the training program (ISFM cat. A). Obtaining a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from the University of London in 2014 enabled him to pursue research projects in epidemiology with various groups in Switzerland and abroad. This experience led him to co-author a book on clinical epidemiology titled “Epimed” published by Médecine et Hygiène. In 2017, he became a adjunct-professor at McGill University in Montreal. His career then shifted towards healthcare quality with the attainment of a diploma in 2017 from Harvard University in Boston. His research primarily focuses on inappropriate medical interventions and the adverse effects of overmedicalization, a topic he aims to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In April 2019, he was appointed as a adjunct-professor in the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva. As a member of the Smarter Medicine committee, he leads the “Choosing Wisely” working group within the European Federation of Internal Medicine since 2023.
