Mathieu Bernard

Mathieu Bernard is currently tenure track Assistant Professor in palliative psychology within the Service of palliative and supportive care of the Lausanne University Hospital. In line with the general concept of “resource-oriented palliative care”, his main research interest concerns the application of positive psychology to palliative care. The principle is to focus on identification and activation of resources that can help patients and families improve their quality of life and prevent upcoming problems. He has obtained funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Cancer league, the Leenaards Foundation and the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences for research projects on altruism,gratitude and post-traumatic growth. In addition, he is also involved in the development and validation of tools that can be useful for both clinical and research purposes in palliative care. Practicing also as a clinician since 2016, this activity enables him to pursue research that considers the psychological issues underlying the clinical reality of palliative care patients and their relatives.
